Ideas on Getting a Hobby
It does not matter if you have a busy schedule, but it is important that you dedicate a couple of hours each week for a hobby, which is something that you enjoy doing and are able to relish every bit of it. All of us need to have a personal hobby so that we can dedicate some time for our own needs and ideas. When you invest your time in doing something which you like, it is not only fun but interesting as well and it will help you to de-stress yourself and will also enable you to dissipate off your anger or negative feelings which you might have accumulated inside yourself due to your busy schedule.
If you cannot think of anything interesting as a hobby that you enjoy, then you must take some time to go back to your school days and think about the one hobby which you relished so much that it still brings back smile on your face. This travel down the memory lane will certainly educate you as to why hobbies are important for all of us.
There are number of fun activities that you can indulge in and you can get the best personal time for yourself by setting aside time for your hobby, away from work and home duties and responsibilities. If you are finding it difficult to come up with your hobby, then you can take some time to explore your interests so that you can come up with a meaningful hobby for you.
One of the common interests for adults is music. You will be surprised to learn that there are several different ways through which you can transform music into your hobby. For instance, you can enroll into classes and get to learn a new instrument. If you feel you are not musically talented, it is still fine to learn to play a new instrument. All you need to do is learn some basics so that you can enjoy playing the instrument during your free time.
If music is not something you are going to look for as a hobby, then you can turn to reading and writing which are certain basic hobby ideas. Even having some quiet time for you is also a good way to relax and get away from the stress and strain of today’s noisy environment.

The joys of a garden craft workshop
Today I am celebrating some excellent news. My enormous collection of scrapbooking, crochet and knitting equipment and materials has finally outgrown our home, and out-stayed it’s welcome.

And why is this excellent news? Because my husband is now so fed up of the never ending craft clutter, he has miraculously found enough money for me to have my very own summerhouse in the garden, to use as a workshop.
I am so excited by this, and in an attempt to justify the expense, I’d like to convince you all that a garden craft-room is a worthy investment.
Firstly, imagine the peace and quiet. When the dear husband needs to find some socks, or refill the tea caddy, no longer will he be able to pop his head around the door to interupt me. Instead he would need to put on some shoes and trek down to the end of the garden. What’s the betting that since that seems like quite hard work, he finds the socks himself and I get left to my crafting?
Secondly, when I am at home I can concentrate on doing the boring chores and cooking, without gazing longingly at my latest craft project. Normally I can’t help but knit a couple of rows while the kettle boils, but it does really eat into my time, and then I find that household chores take longer than they should because I am not fully committed to them.
And last, but by no means least, I am so looking forward to being able to leave a work-in-progress out on the table and walk away from it until the next day. Now when my crafting time is over, I have to carefully pack all the equipment and materials away to keep them away from the children and the cat. But when I have my very own garden workshop I can leave everything as it is, and just lock the door behind me, knowing my work is safe from grubby fingers.
So since it will clearly benefit every member of my family, I don’t feel in the least bit guilty about this considerable expense – well OK I do feel a bit guilty but I’m getting one anyway.
Sewing Advice: Make Sure Your Hemlines Fall To The Correct Length
One of the most common mistakes I see in sewing projects is designs with hemlines that fall to the wrong length. The biggest mistake to avoid is allowing hemlines to cut across the widest parts of the body. All this does is draw attention to those focal points and bring the overall silhouette out of balance and proportion. But rather than talk in generalities, here are some specific takeaway points that I hope will help you for your next sewing project.
- If you are sewing a top for someone who has thick upper arms it’s advisable to go for three-quarter length sleeves that end just below the elbow. The last thing you want is a shirt with short sleeves that end at the thickest part of the arm.
- Be careful also with hemlines when sewing jackets and shirts. If you are designing a jacket for someone with a heavier bottom half then it’s not a good idea for the jacket hemline to stop at the widest part of their body. For example if they have wide hips measure the jacket so that it stops either at the waist or falls to the mid thigh – and not across the hips. The same goes for shirts. This advice is particularly pertinent when thinking about clothing for pear shaped women.
- If you have a sewing project for someone with “cankles” where their ankles and calfs are of a similar size, then three quarter capri length trousers are probably out. It will be more flattering to sew a pair of pants that come right down to the ankles. The same also goes for skirts. Never sew a skirt with a hemline that ends at the thickest part the legs
If I was to sum this up, I probably say; “Don’t make your hemlines do all the work.’ You don’t want them to have to stretch over your widest part. All this will do is exaggerate your problem area. Hemlines act as horizontal breaks and science tells us that our eyes are drawn to stripes and break-off points. Your goal when designing clothes is to showcase your good areas not to flaunt or draw attention to your problem areas.
A Simple Clever Home Craft
Some of the best inventions are the simplest. While it can often take teams of inventors to come up with an inventive idea, sometimes someone working by themselves with little in the way of education or supplies can make a breakthrough with a great invention. I would like to talk about some of these inventions in this particular post.
The first invention that comes to mind is the simple sunglass holder. I just finished watching an episode of the “Shark Tank” in which this inventor came up with a very ingenious invention. Let me tell you about it.
Have you ever been in the situation where you are not using your sunglasses and yet you don’t know where to put them? I know that this has happened to me quite a bit. I’ve tried to balance them on top of my head but I often forget that they are there and they fall down and break. So much for my hard earned investment! Similarly I would put them on the inside of my shirt collar with similar results. Once I bend over they fall off and I’m off to the store to pick up yet another pair of sunglasses.
What this guy on television invented is a very simple sunglass holder that works by means of magnetism. He has this one piece of metal that goes on the front of the shirt and two very powerful magnets that afix to this piece of metal but on the other side of the shirt. With this device securely in place it is merely a matter of sliding one of the stems of your sunglasses into this device and voila! Secure sunglasses.
This product is hopefully going to be coming to the marketplace soon. It fulfills a need and it is hard to believe that this guy came up with this idea in his own home! Then again, this is where quite a few great inventions have come from…
Home-crafts – Saving Money & Having Fun
In today’s financial climate, hobbies and home-crafts are becoming more and more popular. As families feel the squeeze, it makes sense to try and recycle more, repair what can be repaired, make things for the home instead of buying them and so on.
There’s a wealth of crafts that we can take up that will not only enhance our homes, they can also make great gifts, they’re
a great way to pass the time or involve family and friends and best of all … they’re inexpensive. Of the many crafts that you can take up, there’s hobbies such as:
- glass decoration
- scrap-booking
- card making
- quilting and sewing
- wood crafts
- gardening (think ‘vegetables’)
- painting
- pottery
- candle making
- jewelry making
- and many many more
Even better is the fact that kids can also get involved! There’s hundreds of craft kits for kids available, and encouraging them whilst young will set them up with a great skill for life. Finding craft supplies and products is also pretty easy – an online search (I use the Google homepage) will show you just how many online stores there are.
I have a couple of favorites, but I still check out whats available elsewhere simply because I can and it makes good sense. You’ll also find that online craft stores are competitive and there’s a lot of great savings and discounts available.
For the record I’m into quilting and soft furnishings. Our home is furnished with a wide variety of beautiful creations … quilts, drapes, upholstery (another hobby I took up), not to mention rugs and throws. I also make things for family and friends.
Right now I’m making my sister a gorgeous receiving blanket, and have just finished redecorating my daughters bedrooms using a combination of my home furnishing skills and my love of decorating and thrift store trips!

Home-crafting is a wonderful world to belong to, and you’ll also meet many wonderful crafters along the way. There’ are also dozens of craft fairs around the country, so you can combine a short vacation with a trip to a show. Don’t be afraid to dive in and take up a new hobby – you’ll save a bunch of money, develop a whole range of useful skills and maybe you’ll even end up wondering ‘how come I never tried this before?’!
